Don't Risk It.
Your technology is the backbone of your dental practice. After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer support Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7. If you continue to run on unsupported operating systems, your practice will be at risk.
On that day, all of Microsoft’s technical support, software updates, and security updates for Server 2008 and Windows 7 will fully cease.
What does this mean for your practice?
Since Microsoft’s support and security patches for Windows 7 and Server 2008 will end on January 14, 2020, if any vulnerabilities are found with these systems, Microsoft will not release patches or security updates, which makes them more vulnerable to malicious attacks. If you're still using Windows 7 or Server 2008 in your dental practice, you need to upgrade your systems prior to January 14th, 2020.
HIPAA Compliance
The HIPAA Security Rule (45 C.F.R. § 164.308 (a)(5)(ii)(B) requires that all software used by Covered Entities and Business Associates be kept current and up to date with updates from the software vendor. If a vendor no longer supports a software program, it cannot be used. After January 14, 2020, simply having a Windows 7 computer on your network will be a HIPAA violation.
